Free Speech

I have never agreed with censorship in any form, indeed if there had been censorship then Ignatius Sancho would never have been able to do what he did to aid the abolitionists. This of course then begs the question of what we do about those that are spreading malicious, hateful or dangerous lies? For me, the only option is to confront them, challenge them and disprove their claims.
Unfortunately, in the 21st Century, this can be where such ideals falter. Take Stefania Harris over at Steph’s Blog. She seems to have made it her mission to prove that interracial relationships are a rarity in Britain, that in fact Britain is an intolerant and racist country, where the white majority secretly harbour ill feelings and in some cases hate towards black people, or indeed any people of colour. Even though this is contrary to both fact and reason.
Naturally I tried to point out her errors, assuming she was simply misinformed. However I was wrong Stefania Harris did not want to hear the truth. Ms Harris not only ignored my corrections to her claims, but she banned me from posting on her blog, deleting all my subsequent posts. Furthermore she altered the name of the one post she allowed to remain, which she had since gone on to challenge and ridicule. Without being able to answer her allegations I was left looking wrong, corrected, and her claims looked all the more right.
This is where challenging the crazy, hateful ideas falters as not everyone gives others the chance to counter their arguments, indeed for those who are clearly warped and wrong it pays not to have anyone challenge their ideas.
In Stefania’s case I have been left with the impression that this maybe some new tact by the racists and the bigots. To appear to be highlighting and lambasting racism, where there is none, and by hiding the facts that show multiculturalism is working. Who knows what Stefania Harris’ motives are, but it would certainly be an interesting change of direction for the racists and bigots, stoking fires of racial hatred when all is tranquil.
